Yesterday, Westview High School was notified of the unfortunate passing of an upcoming senior year student. Our School Resource Officer, Ed Flowers, was notified by the Lagrange County Sheriff’s office that Shane Wood was found unresponsive today. Shane Wood was a very kind and polite student who was on track to graduate with the class of 2023. As a student, Shane was always quiet and worked really hard in school. He was a tremendous student in the hands-on classes and earned top grades in his Advanced Manufacturing class. He had a great mind for working on projects and performed well in the shop class. “Shane was a quiet leader. He made the design for our toy hauler we built and actually led the class through the final project,” stated manufacturing teacher Rich Bender.
Shane was the type of student that always called the adults by sir or ma’am. He was very polite and had daily conversations with administrators. “Shane was the type of kid who genuinely cared and always asked how I was doing. He recently wrote me a thank you note and was just checking in to make sure that I was doing ok. He was so respectful,” said Principal Rich Cory. At the end of the day, on the way to buses he always spoke with administrators and wished them a good evening.
As a testament to who Shane was as a person, he won the Student of the Year Award back in the 8th grade voted on by the Westview Junior-High staff. That speaks to his character and how he related to adults.
Anytime we lose a student, our hearts are broken. Shane has been a part of Westview since Junior High and we want to send our deepest cares, concerns, and prayers to the Wood family at this time.
